The European Pair Go Championship took place in Romania this year, in the beautiful city of Bistrița, and was organised successfuly by the Atsumi Go Club.

Nine pairs participated in the event, a low number but one which can be explained by the high number of other big events in the same period and the upcoming World Pair Go Championship, which is exceptionally taking place in August this year, and on which some regular teams prefered to focus.

Nevertheless, the level was tough. In particular, the Swedish pair Lova Wåhlin 2d and Charlie Åkerblom 5d had a reputation as champion slayers, for they had beaten the champions in their individual game by half a point for two years in a row , without taking the title (so far).
Another strong pair was the Maja Marz 4d and Johannes Obenaus 6d from Germany, who had been champions in 2023.
Finally, the Romanian champions Denis Dobranis 6d and Laura Avram 3d were very focused on winning the trophy this year.
Other strong pairs from Slovakia, Poland and Romania had joined the party, letting nobody get an easy win.

They shared some impression about the games and tournament with us:

'Very exciting games, and, like always in pair go, many of them could have swung in any direction. We actually prepared some this year, looked at different openings and practiced playing together, and it payed off!
The tournament was very well organized, so big shout-out to everyone who was involved.

The Germans Manja Marz 4d and Johannes Obenaus 6d took the 2nd place, and the 3rd place went to Laura Avram 3d and Denis Dobranis 6d. Well done!

German (2nd), Swedish (1st) and Romanian (3rd) pairs

Sweden will thus represent Europe at the World Pair Go Championship in Osaka, in August, together with the 2024 European Champions ( because there was no World Pair Go Championship in 2024).

Big thanks to the Atsumi Go Club for hosting the event!
